When we consider the First World War we generally think about the war on the Western Front. This book is a timely reminder that Russia and Germany were fighting on a scale more vast than France and Belgium combined and with plenty of room to spare. Distances were vast and the numbers of troops enormous. The conditions were also worse than anything in Western Europe. The author examines the individual men who made up the infantry in this battleground and compares their intelligence as well as their equipment; as fighting men went, the Russian soldier was brave and stoical, but he was let down.
