When we consider the First World War we generally think about the war on the Western Front. This book is a timely reminder that Russia and Germany were fighting on a scale more vast than France and Belgium combined and with plenty of room to spare. Distances were vast and the numbers of troops enormous. The conditions were also worse than anything in Western Europe.
